John Freeh, BA, MA, MSJ, D.Phil
Dr. John Freeh holds undergraduate degrees from Georgetown University, a Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in English Literature from St. Catherine’s College, University of Oxford.
Before academia, he worked as an Associated Press reporter for The Cleveland Plain Dealer. He later taught literature and writing at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Gonzaga University, Hillsdale College (where he earned tenure), and Wyoming Catholic College. He served as principal of JSerra Catholic High School in California and as inaugural director of the Newman Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
With his wife Helen, he co-founded Kateri College of the Liberal and Practical Arts, a proposed Catholic great-books and trades college which was unable to take flight.
Today, he serves as president of the Mother Rose Colloquia, which provides lectures and seminars to cloistered religious communities nationwide.
Known among former students for his legendary ability to transform writing from clear prose to compelling arguments, John now brings this expertise to Veritas Tutoring, guiding students through Great Books discussions and college-level essay coaching.
Helen Freeh, BA, MA, PhD
Dr. Helen Freeh attended Trinity School at Greenlawn, one of the first Great Books high schools in the United States. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Dallas, a premier Catholic liberal arts college, and her doctorate in English from Baylor University.
She has taught literature and writing to hundreds of students at McLennan Community College, Baylor University, Hillsdale Academy, Hillsdale College, and Hozho Academy. She now homeschools her three children following a Catholic classical educational model and is assisting her husband with the Mother Rose Colloquia.
Beyond the classroom, she has edited and graded thousands of pages of written work, both as a professor and as a professional editor for Baylor University Press, St. Augustine’s Press, and the Catholic Schools Textbook Project (originally edited by her father, Rollin Lasseter).
A lifelong lover of the Great Books with an exceptional gift for guiding students toward clear and compelling prose, Helen now partners with her husband John at Veritas Tutoring, bringing this rich expertise to students through classical literature, Socratic discussion, and college-level essay coaching.
